Die GfsA wurde im Juni 2009 gegründet und im Vereinsregister eingetragen. Sie besitzt die gemeinnützige Anerkennung.
Die Mitarbeitenden, einschließlich Vorstände, engagieren sich in ihrer Freizeit ehrenamtlich für den Verein, seine Angebote und Ziele.
Der Verein setzt sich aktiv gegen Missstände in der Gesellschaft ein. Er bietet als Träger kostenfrei nutzbare Selbsthilfe- und Beratungsangebote im Internet an, unterstützt Personen, die psychische Probleme haben, wegen körperlicher Erkrankungen seelischen Beistand benötigen, sowie generell Personen in schwierigen Lebenssituationen und vertritt dieses Interesse in der Öffentlichkeit.
Darüber hinaus setzt sich die GfsA gemäß Satzung auch für eine Förderung eines wertschätzenden Umgangs miteinander ein und geht mit ihren Interessen an die Öffentlichkeit.
